Ear Infections
Hair grows continuously inside the Poodle's ear canal, if not regularly removed, it becomes a dense plug that traps moisture, debris, and bacteria. Poodles in the Philippines are among the highest-risk breeds for chronic ear infections. At every groom appointment, ask for ear hair plucking. At home, clean ears weekly with a vet-approved ear cleaner. Signs of infection: dark waxy discharge, head-shaking, odor, or visible redness in the canal.
Progressive Retinal Atrophy
Poodles, especially Toy and Miniature types, have genes linked to progressive retinal atrophy (PRA). This is an eye disease that can cause blindness. It cannot be cured, only managed. There are symptoms, such as night blindness in the early stages (bumping into things in dim light), that progress to complete vision loss. Ethical breeders test for PRA before breeding. If you buy from a breeder, request proof of testing. Annual eye exams from age 3 are recommended.
Addison's Disease
Poodles have a high rate of Addison's disease. This condition means their adrenal glands don't make enough cortisol and aldosterone. It's known as the great imitator. Its symptoms are similar to those of many other conditions. These include lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, and collapse. The classic presentation is an acute crisis triggered by stress. Treatment is lifelong hormone replacement, manageable and effective. If your Poodle has unexplained gastrointestinal episodes, ask your vet to rule out Addison's disease.
Bloat (GDV) in Standard and Giant Poodles
Standard Poodles are a large breed with deep chests. They can get bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus), which is a serious emergency. In bloat, the stomach fills with gas and twists. Early signs: unproductive retching, a distended, tight abdomen, restlessness, and excessive drooling. This requires emergency surgery within hours. Feed two smaller meals per day rather than one large meal, use a slow feeder, and restrict exercise for one hour after eating.

Grooming Requirements
Poodle grooming in the Philippines needs the same care as anywhere else. However, the humidity makes it more challenging. The curly coat absorbs moisture from the air, which accelerates mat formation between grooms. Brush through the entire coat every 2–3 days with a slicker brush, finishing with a metal comb. If you encounter resistance, stop and address the tangle before proceeding. Professional grooming every 4 to 6 weeks should include ear hair plucking, nail trim, and a full scissor or clipper cut. Many Filipino Poodle owners maintain a puppy trim or teddy bear style year-round.
